The Left’s Attack on Women: Never Just About Sports
Guest writer: Christy Narsi, AZ Chair, Independent Women’s Network
The Biden Administration’s recent rewrite of Title IX was a clear attack on the guarantee of sex equality in education and sports which would "both undermine constitutional freedoms—like the freedom of speech—and erase the very women that Title IX was enacted to protect.” Luckily, a Federal Judge in Louisiana just ruled that these rule changes are an “abuse of power” and blocked the rule from taking effect in 4 states. Unfortunately, Arizona is not one of those.
This week we hear from Independent Women’s Network’s National Chapter Director, Christy Narsi who breaks down what the rewrite to Title IX means and the implications if it is allowed to take effect. Thank you, Christy--we are proud to call you and IWN colleagues and friends! ~ Kim
This was never just about sports.
After talking to women all over the state, it's clear to me that the general public doesn’t fully understand the ramifications of this action yet. This unconstitutional rewrite unlawfully alters Title IX, which was originally passed in 1972 and designed to prohibit sex discrimination in education. The Biden rewrite alters the original intent of the law, requiring schools to allow males to take athletic opportunities from women and enter private spaces designated for females.
As if indulging men’s delusions to call themselves women isn’t enough, the Biden rule expands the scope of Title IX to cover “gender identity”, which makes it discriminatory for a school to deny a student access to opportunities and spaces that match his or her subjective reality. It requires schools to give males access to girls’ locker rooms, bathrooms, and health classes if the male asserts a feminine “gender identity.”
And don’t think they are only after women. The Biden rule pressures colleges to deny basic due process rights to students accused of misconduct. If parents aren’t worried about their sons being wrongly accused, they should be. It only takes one accusation of sexual misconduct to ruin a man’s life indefinitely.
But wait! There’s more!
Your parental rights? You can kiss those goodbye because the Biden rule limits parents’ ability to exempt their children from lessons on choosing one’s sex, while empowering schools to transition children without receiving parental consent or even informing parents. The new rule both redefines “sex” to mean “gender identity” and carelessly expands the definition of harassment to include protected speech. Schools are already punishing children who use biological pronouns to refer to their classmates.
This extends to school faculty as well. Teachers who “misgender” someone could trigger a “fact specific” Title IX inquiry. As the President of Freedom Academy K-8 Charter School in north Phoenix, I can say, this has serious personal impact. If I misgender someone, or if I don’t force our administration and staff to use a student's preferred pronoun, or if I tell parents the truth about their student, it will be considered discrimination and I could be subject to disciplinary action.
If you’re not nauseous, angry, shocked, or even just bewildered after reading this, there’s a good chance you’re not getting it yet, either. What many feared would happen under this administration is, in fact, happening. We cannot standby silently. . Maybe you’ve decided to pull your kids out of the public school. Maybe you’ve decided to buy 500 acres and build a compound. Maybe you’ve chosen to boycott certain businesses. That’s a good start. But if we only protect our own, who will fight for our country and our fellow citizens? Who will fight for all women? And what kind of a world are we setting up for the next generation if we close our eyes to this?
This is why organizations like Independent Women’s Network and Arizona Women of Action are so vital to the conversation. My challenge to all Arizonans is this: make some serious noise and do not let up! Educate everyone you meet. Talk about this at church, at the gym, and yes, even in the workplace. I am convinced that once women understand the danger, they will finally find their line in the sand and have the courage to also speak up.
We want you to fight back! Please sign our Action Center–Take Back Title IX to send a message directly to your legislators urging them to overturn this harmful Title IX rewrite through the use of the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolutions that were introduced by Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS). It’s time to TAKE BACK TITLE IX. Feel free to personalize the message and share how women’s sports and spaces have benefited you.
