YOU Can Apply the Healing of SALT to our AZ Laws!
We need more good-hearted citizens to feel comfortable down at our Arizona State Capitol! Maybe if more of us showed up to check on ‘Our House’, we’d be happier with the laws that come out of it--laws that literally impact our everyday lives. Maybe WE could make some impact of our own, just by understanding our representatives, how they work for us, and how they NEED our input on bills. You WILL make impact when you take 5 minutes a week to send your opinions on those bills—and Arizona Women of Action makes it easy.
Last week we guided some of our S.A.L.T. (Strategically Advancing Love & Truth) groups on a tour of our beautiful Capitol! These were women and men, kids and adults, who had a great time discovering how easy and important it is to know our way around.
One of our Executive Team Leaders, Debi Vandenboom, was our tour guide. Here’s what she said about what happened:
We had a wonderful time at the Capitol. I personally got more engaged in civics after I visited the Arizona Capitol and saw first-hand how our state government operates and how accessible it is for everyday citizens to be part of that process. After my first visit, I was hooked. On Friday, our group met up under the flagpole and then proceeded into the Senate building to sign up for an account on RTS. This is the state’s “Request to Speak” system which allows citizens to give input on every bill that gets heard. The account must be created on site at the Capitol, to ensure that anyone giving input is in Arizona, but after that, it be accessed from home.
Once everyone had an account, we were met by newly elected State Representative Pamela Carter from LD 4, who made arrangements for us to be able to go onto the floor of the House of Representatives. This was a special treat as you can only do this if you are an elected official or are accompanied by one. On the floor, our group prayed over our state, its government and our elected officials. We also visited one of the hearing rooms where committees meet to discuss bills and hear public testimony and visited the galleries in both the House and the Senate. Many in our group did not realize that those areas are open to the public. You can attend hearings and votes anytime the legislature is meeting! A highlight of our tour was when a 9-year-old girl, who attended with her mom and her siblings asked, “How old do you have to be to be a State Senator?” I asked her if she wanted to run for office when she got a little older, to which she excitedly responded, “YES!” If you have not ever been to our state Capitol, go down and explore. Take your kids or grandkids! Maybe one of them will also want to become a future state Senator!
Christian SALT Leaders (women and men) are connecting Arizonans together each month in homes, churches and even coffee shops. We’re making it fun and easy to make an impact on culture and government. We discuss a current issue and American and Biblical principles. Then we learn simple ways to engage in the civic sphere where decisions are made that affect everyone around us. We apply scripture, prayer, conversation and action to spread salt and light directly into our community.
Many Christians feel uninformed or unable to take the power and love of Christ into the public sphere outside their churches and study groups. So they hold back, and we all suffer—our schools, our government, our churches and relationships.
According to Dr. George Barna, Director of Research in the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University, research done before the 2024 election revealed:
104 million people of faith—including 32 million Christian regular churchgoers—planned not to vote.
This is not Biblical, and it’s no way to ‘love our neighbors’. “The people who know their God shall stand firm and take action” - Daniel 11:32
We invite you to learn more about SALT. Groups are led by Christians, but we welcome everyone who enjoys connecting with people who want to Impact Culture for GOOD!
